web 2.0

>>>>>UPDATE<<<< Thanks to my Facebook friend Ruth Hendrix for providing this link. Check the web cams at the inspection to see how busy they are…. Thanks, Ruth. <<<<>>>>
Maybe I am just a grumpy old wimp, but 78 minutes seems like a lot of time out of my life to get the mandatory car inspection, [...]

ATT still thinks it’s THE telephone Company

by Joe Spake on February 22, 2010

I am old enough to remember Lily Tomlin’s routine as the condescending telephone operator on Laugh In.  The way she handled customers strengthened the public perception of the “Omni-Potent” Telephone Company of the late 1960s.  It was no laughing matter when I opened my telephone bill the other day to find an extra $14.95 charge [...]

Check out the Mind Over Memphis, a video series that highlights the work of Memphis charities, non-profits and assorted artists with comedy. Think of it as Dirty Jobs meets Monty Python meets MIFA.

Here’s a playlist for the entire series:

Human aggregators – the latest magic bullet?

by Joe Spake on February 13, 2010

Everyone’s looking for a magic bullet to conquer social media, leverage Web 2.0 to their advantage, dominate the digital marketplace, and further their self-described expert/guru status.  This seems to be especially prevalent with the late adopters in RE.net ( the real estate cool kids of Web 2.0),  but I see traces of the magic bullet [...]

Social Media – How much is too much?

by Joe Spake on February 11, 2010

I first heard of Web 2.0 Suicide Machine a few weeks ago, and, as a closet Luddite, I must admit it had some appeal.  The site automates your exit from social media, and seems to be gaining popularity with those fed up with the ubiquity of social networking, and yearning for the social elements of [...]

Saying goodbye to a laggard blog

by Joe Spake on January 10, 2010

In an attempt to bank all the Whuffie I possibly could, I started a photo blog a while back.  I thought someone might be interested in my photos, taken around the Memphis area, but, alas, as evidenced by Flickr data and Google Analytics, there is much better response to the photos I post on Posterous [...]

TDOT Cameras come in handy on days like this

by Joe Spake on January 7, 2010

I have seen the TDOT (Tennessee Department of Transportation) cameras along the freeways of the Memphis area, but have never looked at the camera images until this morning, worrying about Katy’s commute.

Wow, lots of cameras, and you can do map mashups on road conditions and traffic flow, incidents, and construction.
If you are “snowed in” today, [...]

Hominy Casserole -Reprise

by Joe Spake on December 23, 2009

I first posted the Hominy Casserole recipe back before Thanksgiving , and got rave reviews from those who tried it.  I even sent a few cans of  Golden Hominy to my Facebook friend Tom Plant in California, who claims golden (yellow)  hominy is rarer than gold out there, and that it’s not easy to  find [...]

Good time and Good Friends at NAR San Diego

by Joe Spake on November 18, 2009

The best part of conventions isn’t governance meetings, innaugurations, classes, presentations, or keynote motivational speakers, it’s the memorable folks you meet and get to interact with IRL (In Real Life), discussing real life stuff and connecting as friends.  I learn more from those folks in that informal situation than I ever can in any of [...]
