Goodbye to the Pig

Starting tomorrow, April 1, 2011,  Midtown’s Piggly Wiggly grocery store at 1620 Madison will be rebranded as a Cash Saver Cost Plus Food Outlet.  The Pig wasn’t my favorite grocery store, but ironically, it was where I always went to get pig parts for holiday cooking.  It’s hard to find good jowls and hocks these days (although I have had good luck at Easy Way).  Hopefully the promise of discounted grocery items will be a draw for the new store.

The Piggly Wiggly brand was founded by  Clarence Saunders founded in Memphis in 1916.  The identities of Memphis’ 3 other Piggly Wiggly stores, at 3049 Elvis Presley, 3071 S. Perkins, and 3237 Winchester will be unchanged for now, but owner, The Castle Group, has not ruled out changes in the future.

Those of us who have been around Memphis for a while remember the Madison location as the flagship Fred Montessi  Grocery.  Quite a supermarket in its day.
