Mission Accomplished! Another piece of Memphis’ history gone

Plenty has been written about the fate of Union Avenue United Methodist Church which sat at the southwest corner of Union Avenue and Cooper Street for 100 years.

There is no use rehashing the actions of the the Methodist Church, real estate agent, OPD, the City Council, Memphis Heritage, the lawyers, the protesters.   The building is gone, to be replaced by a tacky one-story drug store – the fourth in a quarter mile radius.  For CVS, it’s MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

What do you think?  Is Memphis hell bent on destroying it’s historic buildings rather than looking at restoration?  Is there anything good about demolishing historic properties to build chain stores?  Or does the seller/owner of a property have the right to dispose of it any way they see fit?
