A Splendid Time Was Had By All

The 21st Memphis Music and Heritage Festival was a great success. Holding down my volunteer position as manager of the Folklore Hall Stage kept me from doing too much wandering around, but I did get to see snippets of lots of great acts. There is probably not another festival in the country that offers this much variety. From Rockabilly legends Billy Lee Riley and Eddie Bond to Memphis Hip Hop artist AlKapone; From rising indie star Harlan T. Bobo,
to R & B’s Bobby Rush; From the Jazz stylings of Joyce Cobb, Gary Topper and Tony Thomas to the lightning fast bluegrass of GrassFire, to the incredible gospel harmonies of the Singing Southern Jubilees; and of course, one of a kind mixes like Jim Dickinson, Sid Selvidge and Jimmy Crosthwait together on stage. Mix the music with the storytellers, dancers, cooking demonstrations,Memphis Roller Derby, and free admission and you have a sure fire winner.
See you next year!

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS AND VENDORS

For Memphis Music & Heritage Festival

VOLUNTEERS

One of the most amazing facts about an enormous undertaking like the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival is that it’s produced by the Center for Southern Folklore with a full and part-time staff of only a half dozen people. The secret is VOLUNTEERS. Every year, dozens of Memphians and Mid-Southerners contribute their time and their energy to a variety of jobs – setting up vendor booths, serving dinners, keeping the trolley tracks clear, decorating Main Street with festive lighting and so on. This volunteer spirit makes it a truly Memphis festival and represents all the good things about our region that the Center celebrates every day.

If you or your organization would like to be part of the special team of volunteers that produces the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival –Saturday and Sunday, August 30 and 31 – just fill out the short volunteer form posted at http://www.memphismusicandheritagefestival.com/2008mmhf.html and send it in or contact the Center at 901-525-3655. The Festival staff asks that prospective volunteers attend the remaining volunteer orientation meeting on August 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the Folklore Store at 123 S. Main. There, volunteers will meet the staff, learn about the duties involved, and get a background briefing about the Festival. Volunteers must attend this meeting if they weren’t there for the previous ones. Whether or not the volunteer form has been filled out, volunteers are still welcome to attend this meeting. The staff will do their best to put this year’s volunteers into positions fitting their desired placement and overall abilities.

VENDORS

Music is only part of the story at the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival. For years, dozens of regional artists and craftspeople have found the Festival a wonderful showplace to display and sell their works to an audience estimated at over 30,000 people. There’s still room for more vendors at this year’s Festival held August 30 and 31. If you would like to be a vendor, please fill out and send in the Vendor Application at the Festival website at: http://www.memphismusicandheritagefestival.com/images/Vendor_application_june_08.pdf or call the Center at 901-525-3655.
