Elvis would have liked Nutella and this crepe

I wanted to do this post and video to coincide with Elvis’ birthday, January 8, but I got a little behind on production.  It’s another “Cooking with Joe” episode featuring a Nutella-enhanced, peanut butter and banana “crêpe”, kind of in the the vein of the famous Graceland fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches.  I don’t know if Nutella was around while Elvis was alive, but I am sure he would have found it to be a great complement to his favorite sandwich.

And Elvis was a bacon lover too.    I heard he would fire up the Lisa Marie just to fly to his  favorite PB,  B & B(acon) Sandwich spot.  Interesting Wikipedia article on PB, B & B.

The next “cooking” excursion will involve bacon and Nutella.

Happy (belated) Birthday, Elvis!

Elvis Week!

I am a little bit late in announcing Elvis Week this year, but the best is yet to come.  Check out the OFFICIAL SCHEDULE.  Still lots of great events to enjoy.  For this week Memphis is Mecca for tens of thousands of Elvis fans, and many who just like to watch.

If you have never been to the Candlelight Vigil,  go on down to Graceland Sunday evening.  You don’t have to participate in the actual candlelight pilgrimage up to the Meditation Garden.  Just being in the crowd with Elvis Presley Blvd. closed for the evening is quite an experience in itself.   See you there!

Getting geared up for Elvis Week

Regardless of our ages, we Memphians have had Elvis in our presence as long as we can remember.  I know folks with Elvis tattoos who weren’t even born in 1977, the year Elvis died.  Let’s face it, the boy from Tupelo will  live on forever in the hearts and minds of millions (maybe billions).  And that brings me to the annual August pilgrimage event Elvis Week,  or as many locals refer to it – Elvis Death Week.

Well, Jimmy Buffett does a fair job here, but if you want to see REAL fake Elvi (what is the plural of Elvis?), there will be hundreds around Graceland during Elvis week – a mind-boggling array of  sideburns, glasses and jeweled jumpsuits.  And Elvis “tribute artist” competitions. But mostly, its the pilgrims, fans from all over the world, converging to worship the king  and absorb the Elvis essence from August 10-16.

I think Gillian Welch captures some of the Elvis essence in this song.   Wikipedia features 6 pages of entries for the search “songs about Elvis”.   I will will be posting more about Elvis week.  See you there.
