I have been on the grid; did you miss me?

PT Boat on Mud Island

PT Boat on Mud Island 1974 - from my personal photo archives project

The whole social media thing has been social mania for me for the last few weeks.  I have to squash so much into my time and still do my job as a “full-time” real estate agent, and all those other niceties of life, like being a good husband.   I wonder sometimes what processes I can terminate.  The changes in FaceBook, the yo-yo stock market, politics in general, Google +, viewing, scanning and indexing every photo I have ever taken, and that never ending stream of incredibly interesting items in my RSS reader keep me more than busy.  And that is not to mention the planned and unplanned photo excursions, and, of course, updating this blog as well as my real estate blog.

If you are following me in the social space, you know that I have been sharing and even creating some interesting content lately.  Do I really need to keep blogging?  It’s a question I ask myself often; but I do feel some deep obligation to add to this journal.  So,  here are some of my more rewarding recent discoveries, inspirations and projects: Continue reading

In a Real City (revisited)

Still no progress on collapsed building at 118 Madison

On July 5, I posted In a Real City addressing the 3 month closing of Madison Avenue in the heart of Downtown.

[stextbox id=”grey” caption=”Excerpt from In a Real City, posted 7/5/2011″]Late in March of this year, the Commercial Appeal reported the roof collapsed at 118 Madison, a 4-story Downtown building, between Main and Second.  Due to potential dangers from the structure, the Fire Department closed the street.  Two months later, in early June, Center City Commission President Paul Morris caught some criticism for saying that a “real city” would not let a collapsed building block the Downtown Trolley for more than two months.[/stextbox]

This is a 7/5/11 photo taken of the progress of repairs on 118 Madison.

Madison Closing 7-5

Progress on 118 Madison - 7/7/11 - 3 months after collapse

To the casual observer, little, if any, progress has been made in the last month.   Continue reading

Mid-August in the Mid-South – deep blues and Elvis worship

Blues at Cathead - Clarksdale If you want to get to the roots of what  Robert Palmer was talking about in Deep Blues, you have to be at  this year’s Sunflower River Blues and Gospel festival, August 12-14, in Blues Mecca, Clarksdale, Mississippi.  If you are looking for what some call the blues, as played on $1500 guitars on Beale Street, this probably isn’t the festival for you.  This festival is about the Deep Blues, rooted in the Delta and it’s culture, some raw and gritty stuff.  It is always sweaty, sticky, hot.  There are lots of impromptu performances around the Downtown Clarksdale Area,  and there are some interesting places to grab Bar-B-Q, delta tamales and a cold beverage.  Be sure and drop by Ground Zero.
It’s an easy drive (about 1.5 hours) down Legendary Highway 61 from Memphis.  Click here for information and lineup.  Continue reading
